Totem on a footholder

Post by LightDaemon » Fri Dec 07, 2018 11:51 pm

So I decided to put a totem on a footholder :

It works very well 95% of the time.

The 5% remaining though, the totem falls. I can't find a reason, it seems like he falls randomely, depending on how many time I have restarted the level. It is EXTREMELY annoying.

Any help would be very appreciate. Thanks in advance!

Footholders are loaded globally to not mess up their patterns when on-screen (this was a bug in ye olde versions), but the totem is loaded only when his bottom right corner is showed (or every other enemy).
Totem Polems; along with hobbits; are the only enemies that jump when loaded. So if you´ re placing the totem from the bottom, he will jump and catch the holder, but he has to be in range of the jump.

That´ s my explaination IF the totem jumps from below. I still don´ t know how the totem falls. Maybe it´ s a bug, I don´ t know. Maybe the footholders path goes over the totem loading tile? Maybe.

Yea I've had push blocks fall randomly off of footholders. Seems they are quite buggy. :P

Velocity and collision problem. If the Footholder goes up and the Totem Polen falls down, the difference in their vertical velocities, it can go through the collision box on the Footholder, and the game will fail to register the box. Basically, objects go through each other if they go too fast at each other.

There's no way to fix this by using Footholders, unless without a lot of potentially level-breaking and hard to keep up with redesigning to account for global timers, but you can turn the Footholder into a Crash Lift and have it go down; that way the Totem Polen will always stay on it.
A fangame Soon™ to be announced, maybe.

If the foot holder is moving vertically, place the Totem Pollun over the path of travel so it will always drop onto it. In case it's moving horizontal, just put it on the most likely spot for it to be and hope.

Not related, but I like how the totem looks exasperated.

Indeed, it must be tedious standing on a footholder all day. He's waiting to be killed, in other words. Technically speaking, it's a very japanese thing. Very bright.
