On Giving Feedback

Post by D-Man » Thu Nov 07, 2019 6:08 am

I've decided to take a break from making levels, and I wanted to focus on giving feedback for other people's levels to help them. But, I have trouble getting my thoughts together for a post, and I wanted to know: how do you give effective feedback to other users?

Hmmm, let's see... The simple way to do it is to praise the author for anything in the level that you found particularly fun or amusing, and to point out the places where the author went wrong, and explain to him WHAT he did wrong so that he knows not to do it again.

If you want to go more complex and technical, some people separate their feedback by categories (aesthetics, difficulty, etc.).

A level's difficulty is good when it is not so easy to bore you, while at the same time not so hard to frustrate you.

Here what I do:

First I go to the webmeka site and take a quick look at the map, then play the level as a semiblind playthrough. After I finish the level, I recap to myself: what did I liked, what I found interesting and what forgettable or need a redo?
I head back to the forums and post a reply and retell what I felt during my semi-blind playthrough, pointing out what I liked and what not,

Personally, I do a few small paragraphs: Intro (first-glance observations and maybe a quip to catch attenton), Impactful notes (could be good or bad - if bad, try to suggest how to make it better, if possible), and Overall (note the stage's weakest points and offer how the author could work to improve them). Generally do focus on helping the editor improve their work instead of tearing what they have already down. :)

WebMeka's site can be helpful at times, especially for fan challenges / contests with room count restrictions. It's also nice help to weed out any secret paths that blatantly break rules - but hey, this may not apply to what your goal is.

The first step, before learning how to give good feedbacks, would be to actually give some.

Because the showcase section seems completely dead.
