almost full screen battles

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to make a boss who occupies almost the entire screen?

Did you mean like the final wily bosses where its a big machine, or like the bosses in cuphead and other run and gun games?

Well I know a guy that may help you find an idea. Check out his level list here and you might find some boss design you need.

yes
oh well bosses like spark man, pharaoh man, concrete man, and toad man are really good when they're stuck in a box.

Spark Man it useful for keeping the player on their toes, and covering a large area.

Pharaoh Man Can make a well telegraphed attack that goes across the screen.

Concrete Man Makes Earthquakes occasionally.

Toad Man Keeps players firing at a certain spot to keep Toad Man from using his attack.

there are many others that can make a cool fight more interesting, instead of just hitting the boss over and over again, what if you have to wait for tornado man to blow you into the air so you can hit the boss.

or having wind man make strong winds during the fight.

for me Its all about taking the abilities you like from Robot Masters and taking out the stuff you don't like and combining it into an epic boss fight.

You could have a madusa fight where Shade Man fires at you at the bottom of the screen while you have to keep firing at Toad Man who's in the middle while Petit Snakeys fire at you from above.
