To begin, I know that WreckingProgram has once deconfirmed the "Difficulty Filter".
However, I think he was talking about the changing in behaviors of enemies and gimmicks, and I'm suggesting something different from that.
I call it the Difficulty Blocks. While opening a level having difficulty blocks, players can choose the difficulty based on what settings were applied to the blocks.
There will be 2 types of difficulty block: Appear or Disappear. Players can decide which one of them will appear in which difficulty. The A-Type blocks only appear in the level when the corresponding difficulty is chosen, and the D-Type blocks only disappear at that time likewise.

Examples of using Difficulty Blocks:
- Creators can use Disappear Difficulty Blocks, set them to disappear when Easy mode is selected, thus enable rookie players to obtain more weapon or checkpoints.
- Creators use Appear Difficulty Blocks, set them to appear only when Easy mode is selected, covering some spikes or danger spots.

Just put people in a room with 2 one-way teleporters at the beginning of the level, each to a different version of the same stage. There's no reason to implement that.

Wouldn't you have to rebuild the level from scratch, then?
For a few of my levels, I don't think there'd be enough space on the map.
where does the smile end? where do the eyes begin? do i even have eyes!?

How I would personally implement difficulty levels in my stages:

Bass = Easy mode
Mega Man = Normal mode
Protoman = Hard mode

Even if the chance of difficulty blocks being added is small, I think it would be cool if we got "easy mode platforms", that behave like stationary Footholders.
They'd look like the red-and-white platforms that appear when you select "easy" in the MM10 difficulty selection:

Different sizes for them would be a nice option too.

I proposed something like that right in my previous subject, blocks that you can upload but not download, or something like that, but those work like that, cheater.
