Favorite Aspect of Mega Man

Post by D-Man » Fri Nov 15, 2019 9:48 pm

Despite how mass-produced the Mega Man series is, there are a lot of smaller pieces that come together to form a unique platforming game franchise that stands the test of time. This poll/thread is where you get to discuss these parts, as well as what initially drew you into this series.

Some info on what the parts mean:
Characters - Be it Mega, Proto or the Robot Masters they face, these are the people who are usually doing the jumping and shooting.
Levels - From a seizure-inducing waterfall to a robot disposal facility, these are the places where the action primarily takes place.
Weapons - Your reward for defeating a Robot Master is a copy of their own weapon. They have varying degrees of usefulness.
Music - The iconic chiptunes that you can't get out of your head, like MM2 Wily 6.
Story - Yes, there is actually a reason why all these robots have to die.
Graphics - Not just the quality of the graphics, but the way things are drawn, too.
Spin-Offs - The short-lived attempts of branching out into new genres and game styles.
Structure - How the games are designed to stand out from other platformers. Examples would be the 8-way non-linear stage select, or abilities like sliding.
Formulaic-ness - Mega Man games are infamous for being extremely similar to each other, to the point where I've listed it as a vital aspect of the series.

You have to realize, the graphics for the NES Mega Man games were actually pretty high spec for the system, especially in their colors and the insane amount of detail. They're still some of the best pixel art in 8-bit games today. Each stage had different music, aesthetic, a unique array of enemies, and a boss at the end. The weapons compliment dozens of playstyles, and the level design is Not you Mega Man 4. Go to hellfunctional and fun, making for interesting platforming sections and a solid challenge.

Characters, Weapons, Music, & Structure.

Opted out on selecting Level Design, because the quality is pretty inconsistent on the whole.
