Minecraft vs. Terraria

Post by BenPlusMM » Thu Oct 31, 2019 1:23 am

apparently this thread has turned into a minecraft versus terraria debate, so...

here's the original text of the post
BenPlusMM on Oct 30, 2019 wrote:I'm making a Terraria mod! It's pretty much just adding random things that I both like and can code to the game. I'm still very new to this, so don't get mad at me for not having much yet. The discord server is right nyyyeah, and I'd really appreciate some ideas.

Currently, the things I've coded include:
14 items
Of those items:
1 is placeable
3 are armor
7 are weapons
2 are consumables

Terraria is nothing like Minecraft

Both game's creators are friends with each other and both games aim to do different things

Lemme count up just bosses (on each game's respective Normal Mode):
Minecraft:
Wither (can be fought after at least going to the Nether)
Drops Nether Star
Ender Dragon (can be fought after at least going to the Nether)
Ends game, gives a chance of acquiring a useless egg
Terraria:
King Slime (can be fought at any time)
Can drop a mount, a hook, and armor
Skeletron (can be fought after locating the dungeon)
No reward
Eye of Cthulu (can be fought if you have the summon or a random chance at night if you have 200 max HP)
Can drop the Demonite/Crimtane, allows Goblin Army to invade
Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulu (can be fought after obtaining bombs or dynamite)
Drops crafting materials
Queen Bee (can be fought after finding a hive)
Can drop a sword, a bow, a magic weapon, and an accessory that can increase the strength of the aforementioned weapons
Wall of Flesh (can be fought after obtaining a Guide Voodoo Doll)
Sends the game into Hardmode (not a difficulty setting) and can drom Pwnhammer, Breaker Blade, and emblems for the damage classes
The Twins (can be fought after one Demon/Crimson altar is broken)
Drops Hallowed Bars and Souls of Sight
Destroyer (can be fought after one Demon/Crimson altar is broken)
Drops Hallowed Bars and Souls of Might
Skeletron Prime (can be fought after one Demon/Crimson altar is broken)
Drops Hallowed Bars and Souls of Fright
Plantera (can be fought after beating all three Mechanical Bosses)
Can drop a sword, drops the key to the Lihzard Temple
Golem (can be fought after locating the Lihzard Temple and defeating Plantera)
Can drop a melee weapon, an accessory, and Beetle Shells
Lunatic Cultist (can be fought after defeating Golem)
Drops the Ancient Manipulator
Moon Lord (can be fought after at least three of the Celestial Pillars have been defeated)
Ends the game, drops various weapons, the Portal Gun, and Luminite

Proof enough for you that Terraria isn't just 2D Minecraft?

Terraria itself is already great, and mods extend that even farther, with some modded bosses including Viscount, Queen Jellyfish, The Ragnarok, Devourer of Gods, Supreme Calamitas, etc.

To be fair, Minecraft also has some good mods, but no megamods like Terraria has. No Minecraft mod comes close to the scope of the likes of Calamity and Thorium, but some mods do add a bunch of content.

Yeah, Orespawn, Aether, and HBM's Nuclear Tech are pretty big Minecraft mods, but they don't add as much bosses or content as most Terraria mods

Kind of a really old debate here, didn't think there was still so much beef between the games' communities despite each advertising the other. I mean hey, the both pick up each others' weaknesses while still having their own perks, so agree to disagree? :?

The way I see it, MC caters way more to creative, beautiful building. Sure, Terraria can be pretty, but it's a bit restrictive with only 2 planes and there's still no dedicated mode for creative play as Minecraft has. The more generic "block" style also leads to far more interesting usage of things that normally wouldn't be considered for build purposes.

Likewise, progression towards goals and action in general is more Terraria's strong suit. Nothing against the Ender Dragon, but after (or even before) him you just grind up for a beacon that really only helps with - you guessed it - more creative freedom. Terraria has so many mobs, bosses, and weapons that combat is just way more thought through in it.

Minecraft has an extra dimension. *mic drop*

Okay seriously though, the extra dimension makes for so much more building oppurtunity. It also does a lot of other cool things. In Terraria, there are no sneak attacks, but in Minecraft you never know what's around the corner. The reason creepers creep is because unless you have third person on you can't see them. Minecraft is a lot simpler to learn, no endless tutorilizing, even if you go into the game for the first time you won't be clueless. Whereas if you play terraria, there's a lot more complexity (some I feel is unesscessary) that adds to the confusion, so unless you play the tuorial you're screwed.

Plus in the 360 version you have to manually open doors. In a 2D game that doesn't work. Doors should open automatically like the mobile version.

besides, you're complaining about having to open doors yourself when you also have to do that in minecraft

I'll be perfectly honest.

One of the major reasons why I avoided Terraria like the plague...

...is because I think the player character looks like an ugly bootleg SNES Final Fantasy 4 NPC.

This is one of the other major reasons. Losing a dimension really takes depth away from combat, building, and exploration.
Due to my current inability to play MMM in a satisfactory manner on either of my devices, I will be on hiatus from activity for an indefinite period of time.

Well why shouldn't there be speed traps in 2D Sonic and it's okay in 3D Sonic? Because you can see what's in front of you.

Terraria's combat is a lot more quantity than quality

Well it does have a lot of weapons, as royalguard mentioned it's 2D, so the combat loses lot of depth. Minecraft weapons can be aimed in... a whopping 46656000 directions (I'm not even kidding, 360 X 360 X 360 = 46656000) with 2D at best it's just 8.

Arguably even more directions, as I'm pretty sure you can turn your character a fraction of a degree in any direction, which can factor in various decimal values.

Terraria isn't a game about going fast. It's unfair to compare it to Sonic.

Oh cool, you can aim weapons in 46656000 directions. Why does that matter? Just because you can aim in 46655640 unnecessary directions doesn't mean it's a better game.
