Seems to be a severe lack of GTA:SA in this list...

Understandable, since it's by far one of the worst of the series, along with the last one.

Oh no! Somebody with a different opinion than me!

No, this game is definitely not one of the worst. You want the worst? Go to the original. V got ruined by a bunch of children. SA is definitely one of the most intriguing ones I've played through, it was way more enjoyable and memorable than earlier titles (and most later titles).

When I talk about Grand Theft Auto I usually don't care much about the first two.

I think GTA III and GTA Vice City, despite the clunkiness of the gameplay, are very well made regarding the level design. There's a pretty decent amount of freedom in the main missions and the open-world side is gorgeous. The cities are very believable and the overall atmosphere depicts very well the 90's and the 80's. Other than that, you quickly find your way around Vice City and Liberty City, eventually learn every shortcuts, it's part of the masterpiece level design, and back in 2001, open world games were not as overated as nowadays.

GTA SA really was impressive at its time, but is more like a messy sandbox game than a believable and well designed open-world. It's just too big. Some missions require to travel long distances and if you mess up, which will most likely be the case since the gameplay is as much as clunky as its predecessors, you drive all the way back from the begining and then play the mission again. It worked in GTA III and GTA Vice City because the map was not that big.

All the RPG elements are irrelevant, since the gameplay never really follows. The game still is much fun.

I think GTA SA is too "storyline-oriented". Many missions are boring because they only serve the storyline. In GTA III and GTA Vice City the storyline served the missions. Not the same thing.

GTA V was not ruined by childrens. You are talking about GTA online, which has nothing to do with GTA V. GTA V is just a huge disappointment.

A great journalist and philosopher once wrote :
The whole marketing campaign for this game is a lie. It [GTA V] is too linear for a game that allows the player to play as three different characters! It's boring at a certain point. Activities are not really funny. And the rest is just what you could do in GTA IV.
There's a video that interestingly explains why Rockstar is disappointing :
