unpoplular opinion: i like marble zone! if you watched sonic 3 and knuckles's channel you know that when he finished marble garden zone in his sonic 1 no badnik hurt run he had a fast route to go through it, honestly marble garden zone just shows that creativity = speed, and speed = good OR bad, people complain about marble garden too much, god. give it a chance
i would rate it as close to great as possible, its not so good at first, but when you learn that creativity = speed, levels that are slow can become fast at your own mind, dont overlook bad zones, be creative and find out good ways, also he doesnt use glitchs in sonic 1 so no he does not use the zip, just sayin
I actually have fun with it too, it's just that I still can't deny it's not that great.,
I'm pretty neutral on Marble Zone myself, well there is a ton of wall shortcuts and some advanced techniques to speed some segments up, some segments are painfully slow, not helped by the monotonous music and dull visuals (in my opinion).

Then again I'd willingly play Mable Zone any day, if it meant never playing Marble Garden Zone ever again. Between the unwieldy top gimmicks, annoying ball & chain placements, and grasshopper enemies that are invisible due to hiding underground. Its all a complete mess, even if it does have better pacing than Marble Zone by comparison.
Eh I like Marble Garden better. Maybe it's because of insta shield but I never had a huge issue with the ball chains (though they are unbfair at times). I'm writing S3 review right now and have given marble garden a good score, so this will be polarizing

Very interesting video here. It discusses the assumed design principals that went into the design of classic sonic games, an how the tastes and opinion of gamers have evolved over time around said design principals. Certainly an interesting watch.

Experiment they did mostly for the worst

I haven't written reviews for the last two games. Darn it

sonic 3 review I guess (As sonic not knuckles)

Angel Island

If I've seen a great opening level this has to be it. The pace is so fluid, the gimmicks so creative, the gameplay so solid. Nothing is out of place, it isn't ridiculously exploitable, The atmosphere is spot on. It's the closest to perfection I've ever seen in a sonic game, so I don't really have much to say regarding it.

100/100

Hydrocity

Labyrinth and Aquatic Ruin were pretty crap levels. Tidal Tempest was pretty good. But Hydrocity? Oh wow. it's just so good. Labyrinth's levels were too long and focused on underwater too much. Aquatic Ruin's levels were not well designed around Sonic 2's mechanics, resulting in a glitchy, harsh mess. Hydrocity zone is a great basis on underwater and overwater gameplay, having mechanics to ease playing (e.g. running on water), and having watertight (pun intended) water psychics. Hydrocity did it and did it good.

98/100

Marble Garden

Marble garden can be pretty bland sometimes. it is a little heavy on the speed traps. and the visuals are nothing to scream over. But overall, it's pretty solid. levels start to become a lot larger-scale here, with more speed and more platforming. there is a lot of exploration, and a lot of repetition. I can see the anti-appeal, but I respect Marble Garden overall.

76/100

Carnival Night

It's not my favorite casino/carnival level, but Carnival Night is a lot of fun. It is a bit on the long side and ids one of the glitchier zones in the game, but its solid level design and gimmicks make up for it. That and it contains a couple of my favorite bosses in the game. I have to say, an underwater casino level is also an amazing idea and I'm glad they tried it and sucseded. But no respect for that carnival night barrel: It can go to Lava Reef IMO

83/100

Icecap

From Sonic 3 alone, this is my least favorite level. But I still like it. You feel on ice. Fun and well-done gimmicks, great levels, just an irritating boss and a so-so pace. That's all folks

73/100

Launch Base

A great final level from Sonic 3 Alone! The hazards are great, the aesthetic is amazing. Good final boss and difficulty. It feels like a final level above everything, and executes it impressively. I can't say anything really bothered me about it too much. Speedy but has a good difficulty.

96/100

Overall

Sonic 3 is an amazing platformer in every way. Nothing gets in your way to impact you negatively while playing, and even though it is the easiest of the classics (besides Sonic Advance), you still feel challenged. This game is a must play and what a play it is.

Level average: 88/100

Overall game score: 96/100

MASTERPIECE

Sonic and knuckles coming... probably not soon to be honest
