Progress Bar for Updates?

Post by Sticks » Fri Jun 21, 2019 3:14 pm

This might be a bit selfish, but I was wondering if it was possible to maybe make a little progress bar with a percentage of how much of the next version of MMM was completed.

Here me out, there's this dev of a flash series who on his website has something like this, I was wondering if a mod here could implement that idea either on the forums, ingame (like the title screen) or on the discord server. Again sorry if this is a bit out of place and selfish, just feel like this would help with people wondering when the next update will be and how far along it is.

Or at least a small number, maybe at the corner of the minimap, telling us how many screens we've used. Reason this is useful is because, when I was making my Pokemon Red and Blue remake level, I made it too big without realizing and went past the limit where the level starts to lag. As of v1.4, said limit appears to be 280 screens, 7 times the amount it was in all prior versions (a measly 40 screens), so it shows that the dev team has been making a great effort to reduce lag.

But yeah... Knowing how big our level is and how dangerously close we are to the threshold where the game starts to lag would be useful.

Well I got my answer, and yes I was talking about Kupogames, I was just wondering if something along the lines of how far along an update is could ever be implemented, although I didn't think about this idea in levels to show how many screens or even (far fetched I know) a tracking system that finds out how many screens are left in the stage and gives you a percentage, although that wouldn't work well with backtracking or metroidvania type levels so nevermind.

I know, but with the "no" was enough, the bar below looks like a punishment.

Yeah I was just being a bit cheeky. If it came off as rude to some people, that wasn't my intent. I apologize if that's the case.

Y'know, I don't hate this. Somewhere on the editor there's a "% of space used" It could be neat, but that's more in the Luigi and Wrecking territory for decisions.

I feel like an actual counter (just the number) would be better than a percentage, since we know the exact number of screens (1000) and while creating my Pokemon Red and Blue remake level I accidentally figured out the lag threshold (about 280 screens).

But yeah, if I had this mechanic, I wouldn't have to manually count the screens to determine exactly when the game starts to lag, and I could more easily see when I'm approaching that limit, so that I don't accidentally go beyond it next time I try to make a huge metroidvania map.

Not really. I have not yet made the Victory Road section of the level, and I've made the level too big (300+ screens) so I'm in a desperate need to delete a lot of rooms, because while the lag is not making the level unplayable, it is still diminishing the enjoyment of playing it. :(
